CJCA News and Updates

The April CJCA meeting was focused entirely on the construction at First Agape/Gibson Grove and Scotland AME Zion Churches on Seven Locks (see article “Preservation of Two Historic African American Churches on Seven Locks Road”).

Our next meeting–and the last until the fall–will be held on Wednesday, May 22 at 7:30 at the Clara Barton Neighborhood Recreation Center (CBNRC).  We will have a discussion on CJCA history and election of officers for the 2024-2025 program year.  Feel free to join in person or on https://meet.google.com/rqp-dudh-tss.

2024-2025  CJCA Calendar Preview

CJCA will finalize and print the calendar for the next program year in the June newsletter.  We intend to hold our regular events, starting with the Fourth of July parade, the Crab Feast, the Turkey Trot, the Holiday Party, Trivia Night, and the Spring Egg Hunt.  In addition, we are planning a Cabin John Day Out to Minnie’s Island with the Minnie’s Island Community Conservancy this summer, a Cabin John Home Tour next spring, and another bike clinic, also next spring.  We are particularly excited about the Cabin John Home Tour as many people have expressed interest and we last held one about a decade ago.

Topics already in development for our regular monthly CJCA meetings include a presentation on ballot initiatives this election cycle at the October meeting.  These initiatives can often be confusing so CJCA will present them objectively, relying on local CJers who understand each of these initiatives (absolutely no information will be presented on individual candidates).  A future meeting will feature an ornithologist with a presentation on local birds.  We’ll also have three blood drives with incentives for first time donors!

We are always looking for your ideas regarding how CJCA can meet its chartered purpose to “(1) stimulate civic interest of a non-partisan and non-sectarian nature, (2) represent the interests of its citizens before appropriate agencies, and (3) promote the general welfare of Cabin John and adjacent areas in Montgomery County, Maryland” so feel free to make suggestions by emailing cjcapresidents@gmail.com
